WINNER INTERVIEW黒河内 真衣子 / Maiko Kurogouchi

FASHION PRIZE OF TOKYO 2018
Winner Interview

Nov.13.2017

What motivated you to apply to the “FASHION PRIZE OF TOKYO”?

At the sales market in Paris and New York, which I had been going to since 2015, many buyers had advised me, to do a runway. Up to now, mame had been presenting its collection by look-books and collaboration with artists, but just at a time when I had begun to seriously consider presentations as a form of expression, the people around me recommended this prize to me, and I decided to apply because I wanted a new way of the brand’s presentation.

How did you feel when you won the Prize?

It is quite an honor to receive such a prize. I started mame in 2010, and this is its 7th year, but I feel it is thanks to the support of many people that it has been able to continue as a brand. I don’t think this prize was award just to me. I think it has been awarded also, to the factories which have supported us up to now, and our staff.

As the prize winner, what is it that you would like to gain the most (your aim), in the next year?

The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit Japan right after the brand was established, and even today, markets around the world are still in a difficult state, so I am sure that we will still be faced with difficulties from hereon. To maintain the characteristic and individuality of this brand, mame, I think we will need to fortify its mentality as a brand.

Please give us a word on your enthusiasm towards the show to be held in Paris, next March.

This will be our first presentation in Paris, but I have no intention of changing our ways of production and methods of design, which mame has fostered over the years. I am also in search of a method of expression and showing, without losing our way. I also feel strongly that, showing a presentation in Paris is not the main goal of winning this prize. The true significance of winning this prize is developments in overseas business, after the presentation.
